Alonso & Pedrajo
The young winemaking project Alonso & Pedrajo began in 2011 in Villalba de Rioja, Spain, from the friendship of couples Javier and Vanesa Alonso and Alberto and Gema Pedrajo, who aimed to offer artisanal expressions of their land. The four friends vinified their first wines in 2013 at the Honorio Rubio winery in Cordovin, where Alberto Pedrajo works as a winemaker.
The few hectares of vineyards cultivated by the Alonso & Pedrajo estate are located at the foot of the Obarenes mountains, precisely at Finca La Cala, where Javier, Vanesa, Gema, and Alberto grow the grape varieties Viura, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia Riojana, Maturana, and Tempranillo. The vines are mostly very old, rooted in predominantly calcareous and clayey soils, between 550 and 650 meters above sea level, and cultivated according to sustainable viticulture without the use of synthetic chemical products, in respect for the environment and biodiversity. Once ripe, the grapes are strictly hand-harvested and processed through a traditional approach with minimal use of technology. In in this perspective, spontaneous fermentations take place partly in old and traditional terracotta vats, locally called “tinajas”. The white grape varieties undergo very prolonged skin macerations, and the wines, both white and red, age in French oak barrels of various capacities. Throughout the entire processing and maturation process, the masses are not subjected to sulfitation, clarification, and filtration, while stabilization occurs completely naturally thanks to the passing of the seasons.
The limited production of Alonso & Pedrajo Finca La Cala is largely directed towards luxury catering. There are different types of wines produced: from the fullness of the red ‘Suañé’ to the complexity of the orange wines Maturana ‘La Pequeñita’ and Malvasia Riojana ‘La Pequeñita’. A common point of the entire range is the astonishing purity and spontaneity of these expressions, which have quickly established themselves in the wine scene of Rioja.
