Azpillaga Urarte

The winery of Rioja Azpillaga Urarte is the protagonist of a craft production carried out at a strictly family level. At the origins of the estate are the couple Emilio Pérez de Azpillaga and M. Carmen Urarte, who in the 1970s, after years spent cultivating grapes intended for sale in Lantziego, in Rioja Alavesa, began producing their own wines. In the 1980s, the new winery was built and the first labels such as Viña El Pago were officially launched on the market. In 1993, after completing studies in Viticulture and Oenology, the son Eduardo Pérez de Azpillaga Urarte entered the family estate, converting it to sustainable agriculture that excluded the use of synthetic chemical substances. Today Eduardo manages the bodega together with his brother Ignacio Perez. Bodega Azpillaga Urarte includes 12 hectares of vineyards planted on clay and limestone soils at altitudes ranging from 400 to 630 meters. The vines, conducted according to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, include even very old vines and are dedicated to the traditional grape varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Graciano, Garnacha Blanca, and Viura.old and are dedicated to the traditional grape varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Graciano, Garnacha Blanca, and Viura. The foundation of the agronomic management of the Perez brothers is the so-called "regenerative viticulture", which consists of the application of self-produced natural preparations aimed at restoring the health of the plants and the fertility of the soils. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand, and the bunches are vinified whole with carbonic maceration and spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, excluding the use of additives and oenological auxiliaries. The subsequent aging periods take place in wooden barrels or terracotta amphorae, and throughout the entire production process, the use of clarification, filtration, and stabilization operations is excluded. Thus, juicy and authentic expressions of Rioja signed by Azpillaga Urarte originate, labels characterized by a high concentration and always prominent fruit, mostly made through co-fermentation of red and white grapes and rather prolonged carbonic macerations.
