By Farr

By Farr is an Australian winery in Victoria. The estate was founded in 1994 by Robyn and Gary Farr in the Moorabool Valley, between Geelong and Ballarat, about 100 kilometers southwest of Melbourne. It is a historic area, where the vine has resided since the early 1800s, brought to the New World by colonists of European origin, particularly from Switzerland. The suitable soils and the cool, breezy climate proved to be very suitable for the vine, which still today constitutes an important resource for the region. To the initial core of the property, new plots were added in 1994 and 2011. Today the estate covers approximately 50 hectares, of which about a third is dedicated to vineyards and the rest left for grazing and arable land.

The Moorabool Valley area has a particular microclimate, influenced by the winds descending from the vast region of the western plains and the oceanic regime of the sea breezes, which act as a natural temperature regulator, softening the extreme temperatures of day and night. The constant ventilation and good thermal excursions thermal, allow for the maturation of healthy grapes with intense aromas. The soils are predominantly composed of alluvial deposits mixed with clays and limestone, very draining and rich in minerals. In higher areas, there is a prevalence of quartz gravel and soils of ancient volcanic origin, with sands and lava rocks. All these soils are poor in organic matter and of low fertility, perfect for high-quality viticulture based on low yields.

The area has proven particularly suitable for the cultivation of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier, Gamay, and Syrah, locally called Shiraz. Gary's work experiences in France, particularly in Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, have allowed for the selection of the most suitable plots for each grape variety, in order to always achieve excellent results. The great attention in the vineyard and accurate cellar practices are the basis of an excellent production that ranks among the best expressions of the New South Wales region. Elegant and refined interpretations of famous international grape varieties, with a Pinot Noir that surprises with quality.
