Carrosse Martillac

Chateaux Carrosse Martillac tells the story of a return to the origins: that of the Miailhe family, who have always owned the estate's vineyards, and in the 1970s decided to embark on a completely new challenge by dedicating themselves to the cultivation of lily of the valley, abandoning the vineyards. Martillac is recognized as the second production area in France: not by chance does the flower appear on the coat of arms of the local community. The name of the winery takes its name from the ancient cart path that crossed the territory of Martillac and served the Châteaux du Thil, Smith Haut Lafitte, and Rochemorin, skirting the locality known as La Salle, a toponym derived from the noble family of Lassalle and their "hall", that is, the country estate with spaces dedicated to receptions. Since 1748, we arrive at the acquisition by the Miailhe family, and it will only be thanks to a chance meeting with the eminent oenologist Serge Charritte that they will decide to return to viticulture. After almost thirty years, in 1998, the family recovers their best plots by proceeding with the replanting of the vines. 2015 marks the foundation of the Chateaux by the two brothers Ghislain and Julien, who realize the first harvest of the new course with the 2018 vintage.

The vineyard of Chateaux Carrosse Martillac extends over a total area of more than 14 hectares managed according to the standards of the Haute Valeure Environnementale certification: refusal of chemical herbicides, soil work, and inter-row grassing, manual harvesting. The characteristic black berries of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a residual presence of Petit Verdot, are rooted in lean and poor soils, exceptionally draining, covered by a thick layer of large and ancient light pebbles smoothed by the action of the Garonne, along whose left bank extends the denomination Pessac-Leognan. Established only in 1987 after a long union battle and included in the urban fabric of Bordeaux, it actually represents the cradle of Aquitaine viticulture, where some of the oldest vines in all of France are concentrated. The picture is completed by the peculiar white berries of the area: Semillon and sauvignon Blanc, currently not vinified.

The vinifications of Chateaux Carrosse Martillac make use of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, which allow for cold pre-fermentation macerations, followed by spontaneous alcoholic fermentations and malo-lactic fermentations carried out in wood. The aging proceeds for 18 months, traditionally in French oak barriques renewed every year. The classic grand vin and second vin show balance and class to sell.
