Cataldi Madonna
Among the most important wine-growing realities in Abruzzo, Cataldi Madonna holds a prominent place, a historic estate among the main interpreters of Montepulciano in its many variations. The history of the winery began in 1920 in the area of Ofena, in the province of Aquila, with Baron Luigi Cataldi Madonna, but it was his son Antonio who bottled the first labels under his own name in 1975. Today, the management of the estate is entrusted to Giulia Cataldi Madonna, the fourth generation of the family, who continues the work of enhancing Abruzzo's wine heritage started by her predecessors. As a testament to the value that viticulture has historically held in the area, the province of Aquila in general and the area of Ofena in particular were the major wine producers in the region until World War II.
The Cataldi Madonna winery consists of 30 hectares of vineyard area, exclusively reserved for the indigenous varieties Montepulciano, Pecorino, and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. The vineyards are located in the so-called “Forno d’Abruzzo,” a amphitheater-shaped plateau located of amphitheater shape located within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, just below the Calderone, the only glacier in the Apennines and the southernmost in the Northern Hemisphere. This particular environmental situation helps create a unique microclimate, cool in summer and with significant temperature variations between day and night. The vines, planted between 320 and 440 meters above sea level, are cultivated organically, certified since 2016. Cataldi Madonna exclusively produces monovarietal expressions, aiming to showcase the many facets and great qualitative potential of the Abruzzo grape varieties and territory. In the selection of labels, the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo ‘Tonì and the Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo ‘Piè of the Vigne’, top interpretations of their respective denominations. The range of whites from Pecorino and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is also exceptional.
