Château Angelus

Château Angelus represents one of the most famous excellences of the Bordeaux area. It is a Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Émilion, renowned for centuries for the elegance and finesse of its wines. The estate is located right in the center of the Appellation, surrounded by the three churches of Saint-Émilion. Its name derives from its privileged position, which allowed the sound of the bells ringing the Angelus in the morning, at noon, and in the evening to be heard. A sort of religious soundtrack that marked the rhythms of the days in the countryside and in the vineyard. The image of the bell present on the label of the bottles recalls this ancient custom and has now become the symbol of the domaine. Its origins are very ancient, dating back to 1782, when Michel de Boüard de Laforest moved to Saint-Émilion. His daughter married Charles Souffrain de Lavergne and went to live in the property of Mazerat, already dedicated to vine cultivation at that time. After eight generations, the estate is still in the hands of the family and since 2012 is managed by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal.

Angelus is renowned for its particular characteristics, which are based on two main elements: the terroir and the choice of grape varieties. The vineyard is located on the first hills south of Saint-Émilion, in a particularly warm and sunny area that favors excellent ripening of the grapes. The soils are slightly sloping, well-draining, and composed of limestone and sands, with a good percentage of clay that retains water at depth and avoids water stress. Unlike most estates in the area, Château Angelus has chosen to focus on a strong presence of Cabernet Franc (46%) which is cultivated on sandy and limestone soils at the foot of the first hills, while Merlot is present in the more clayey area of the côte. An unusual composition that gives the wines a unique personality and a very recognizable identity within the Appellation.

It is precisely the Cabernet Franc that determines the style of Angelus, always elegant, fresh, and refined, despite the richness of the aromas, the ripeness of the fruit, and the remarkable complexity. The vines have an average age of about 40 years and are managed with high planting density and very low yields, in order to achieve an excellent concentration and full ripeness. The careful vinifications, with gentle extractions and long aging in French oak barrels, give a wine with fine and velvety tannins, expressing aromas of small berries, balsamic hints, menthol, and spices. An absolute excellence to try at least once in a lifetime.
