Château Bastor - Lamontagne

The family tree of Château Bastor-Lamontagne, located in Preignac, in the vibrant heart of Sauternes production, allows us to look back several centuries. This is indeed a winery that was even owned by the King of France, and which, in 1711, was sold to Vincent de la Montaigne. An important moment, because in the deed of sale the Château, referred to as “Bastore”, was already considered significant from a viticultural point of view. Therefore, it is a productive reality whose tradition is well documented, and which, since then, over the decades, despite changing hands, has maintained its aura of notoriety.

Today the property belongs to the company Foncier-Vignobles, and Château Bastor-Lamontagne stands as a true beacon within Bordeaux, diligently and committedly carrying on the century-old traditions of these places.

The vineyards owned by Château Bastor-Lamontagne are included within the municipality of Preignac, one of the five villages that are part of the Sauternes denomination. The vineyard area is 56 hectares, of which the vast majority, 52 to be precise, are gathered in a single parcel. The subsoil is characterized by a siliceous-stony composition, and, between the rows, the typical grapes that give rise to Sauternes are cultivated, namely Sémillon, Sauvignon, and Muscadelle. The vines, whose average age is around 37 years, enjoy an ideal climate, which in autumn favors the development of botrytis cinerea, that “noble rot” that causes an increase in residual sugar in the berries, a fundamental characteristic for the birth of the sweetest wine in the world. The harvest is done manually, selecting only the bunches that have reached optimal ripeness. In the winery, the grapes ferment slowly, before undergoing the maturation and bottling phase, carried out without clarifications and with a single filtration.

is obviously the protagonist of the legendary Sauternes AOC, always characterized by an innate finesse and elegance. Slightly behind is the second wine in the range, the Sauternes “Les Remparts de Bastor”, whose grapes come from the younger vineyards.
