Château Suduiraut

Château Suduiraut undoubtedly represents one of the most celebrated and prestigious estates in Sauternes, a wine region in Bordeaux known for producing some of the most valuable dessert wines in the world. In fact, in the official classification of Bordeaux wines, drawn up by Napoleon III in 1855, Château Suduiraut is listed among the Premiers Crus Classés, the highest level of the quality pyramid, second only to the sole Premier Cru Supérieur: the iconic Château d’Yquem. The estate acquired its current name back in 1580, following the marriage between Leonard de Suduiraut and Nicole d’Allard. Over the following centuries, the ownership of the castle changed hands several times until 1992, when the winery was acquired by the large French insurance group Axa, already owner of Château Pichon Baron and Château Petit Village, which aimed to safeguard and perpetuate the winemaking tradition of the Château.

The Château Suduiraut estate is located in the town of Preignac, where it manages just over 90 hectares of vineyards, planted on sandy-clay soils rich in pebbles, of which 90% is dedicated to Sémillon and the remaining part reserved for Sauvignon Blanc. The presence of the stones allows for the capture of heat generated by the sun, releasing it during the night, promoting a faster ripening of the grapes. The vines, with an average age of about 35 years, produce low yields of grapes due to the high planting density, quantifiable at 7,000 vines per hectare. During the harvest, carried out strictly by hand in several passes, the grapes affected by noble rot, caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea, are selected one by one, capable of dehydrating the berries and developing unique aromas that are the basis of the excellence of Sauternes, the most famous dessert wines in the world.

There are two main Sauternes produced by Château Suduiraut: the Château Suduiraut Premier Cru Classé, the flagship wine of the estate, and the ‘Castelnau de Suduiraut’, a more accessible expression, also endowed with great quality. Regardless of
