Du Nemu
For over 150 years, the Ligurian winery Du Nemu has been producing territory-linked wines, driven by a strong passion that has been passed down from generation to generation. It was Luca's great-grandparents, the current owner, who planted the first family vineyards in 1857 within the municipality of Dolceacqua, precisely in the areas of Arcagna and Cima Tramontina, in the far west of the region. Arcagna is considered the area of excellence for Rossese, the main black grape variety cultivated by the estate and certainly the most representative of Liguria, a land of white wines. “Nemu” is the name of Luca's grandfather, who currently runs the winery together with his father Giancarlo.
The productive reality of Du Nemu can count on approximately 5 hectares of vineyards, almost exclusively dedicated to Rossese and Pigato. The former is a very ancient variety that has found its ideal habitat in the Mediterranean climate of the province of Imperia, benefiting from the maritime influence and the significant daily temperature excursions due to the presence of the Alps Ligurian. The indigenous Pigato is instead a white grape variety mainly spread in the Riviera Ligure di Ponente. It is thought to be a clone of Vermentino, another white grape widely cultivated in Liguria, but after years of research, a certain conclusion has not yet been reached. The plants, trained as bush vines, are located at an altitude between 400 and 500 meters above sea level for Rossese, and at 150 meters for Pigato. In both the areas of Arcagna and Tramontina, where Rossese is cultivated, and in Montecurto where Pigato is found, the soils consist of an alternation of marls and sandy sediments. The harvests are carried out by hand and are accompanied by careful selection of the bunches, while the fermentations and aging take place in stainless steel tanks for the white and, respectively, in oak barrels and tonneaux for the reds.
The pride of the Du Nemu winery is the Rossese di Dolceacqua, the first Ligurian DOC ever, established in 1972.
