El Enemigo
El Enemigo represents a prestigious and esteemed wine estate, among the most important in the entire Argentine wine scene. Leading the winery with passion and expertise are Adrianna Catena, the youngest daughter of the renowned Argentine producer Nicolas Catena Zapata, and Alejandro Vigil, a talented winemaker who has made significant contributions to the enhancement of Argentine winemaking through the fine wines he has crafted, acclaimed and awarded by major international critics. The two launched this joint venture in 2007 in Maipo, Mendoza, striving from the outset for excellence. The expression “el enemigo” means “the enemy”, chosen for this project because, as stated by the producers themselves, the original enemy is represented by ourselves and defines us; the only way to grow is to confront it. Three are the elements that outline the wines of Adrianna and Alejandro: variety, territory, and vintage.
The vineyards of El Enemigo winery are distributed among the areas of Gualtallary, El Cepillo, Chacayes, and Agrelo, where the altitudes range from 970 to 1,470 meters above sea level. Just like the altitudes, the soil composition also varies greatly from area to area, with some lands consisting of sand, silt, and limestone, others rich in rocks and limestone, and others predominantly sandy. The cultivated varieties include the now traditional Argentine grapes Malbec and Bonarda, as well as international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Semillon, and Viognier. The wines age mostly in French oak barrels, although the use of wood is always well measured.
The range of wines from El Enemigo estate is focused on reds, but also includes excellent whites based on French-origin varieties such as Chardonnay and Semillon. These are bottles of sublime quality, perfect for those seeking a taste of some of the highest Argentine wine interpretations, skilled in combining structure and freshness, concentration and drinkability.
