Espiritu Montaraz
Espíritu Montaraz pays homage to the volcanic lands of Puebla, in the heart of Mexico, where the mineral-rich soil stretches between rugged mountains and ancient valleys. The name, “Wild Spirit”, pays tribute to Puebla’s rich mezcal heritage and to the legend of Montaraz, a solitary puma who, in the mists of time, witnessed the birth of mezcal: a bolt of lightning struck an agave plant during a storm and, instead of destroying it, released its golden essence. From that moment on, Montaraz became the agave’s eternal guardian. This is why the distillery has chosen him as the symbol of its mission: to elevate mezcal from a niche product to a global icon. At the heart of this project is Anahi, the first woman in her family to produce mezcal, a proud heir to a tradition passed down through five generations.
The production process of Espíritu Montaraz has its roots in the Ancestral method, the oldest of those recognised by mezcal regulations. It all stems from the Nahuatl word "mexcalli", meaning cooked agave, a reference to the technique of cooking the piñas over a wood fire in pits covered with earth. Every stage of the process, from the hand-harvesting of ripe agaves to distillation in traditional clay stills, is carried out without compromise, preserving techniques that the modern industry has long since abandoned. Espíritu Montaraz is also a proud supporter of the association “Mujeres del Mezcal y Maguey de Puebla”, which promotes and protects the role of women in producer families, recognising their vital contribution to the survival of this age-old tradition.
In the glass, Espíritu Montaraz captures the complexity of a unique terroir: the volcanic soil of Puebla imparts an intense and vibrant minerality to the agaves, resulting in a mezcal with a bold and authentic character. On the nose, elegant smoky notes emerge, complemented by floral and fruity nuances that evoke the wild biodiversity of the Mexican valleys, whilst on the palate the structure is enveloping. Deep and distinctive, these are spirits that evoke the ancient flavours and stories of Central Mexico.
