Il Torchio

Il Torchio is a small family-run production reality in Liguria, located in Castelnuovo Magra, in the province of La Spezia. The winery was born from a project by Giorgio Tendola, a true pioneer in enhancing the Colli di Luni, and, in particular, in the cultivation of Vermentino in this area. An important figure, who passed away a few years ago, who led the new generations of the family, Gilda and Edoardo, his grandchildren, to reflect on an important decision: to let the winery “die,” each continuing on their own path, or to continue dedicating themselves to viticulture, carrying forward and modernizing Giorgio's project. The decision for the two siblings was easy, especially since Edoardo was attending the university course in Viticulture and Enology. Since 2012, it has been these young people who have taken the reins of the winery, enhancing the indigenous varieties of the territory and diligently working to develop an increasingly organized commercial and distribution network, which today can already count on exports abroad reaching 65-70% of the entire production.

Il Torchio owns 12 hectares of land cultivated with vineyards, all included within the DOC Colli di Luni. A particularity that distinguishes the winery is that the vineyards are all grouped in a single plot, a unique case in a terroir like Liguria, where heroic viticulture dominates, made up of many small scattered parcels here and there. The vines are exposed to the southeast and among the rows, the absolute protagonist is Vermentino, accompanied by Canaiolo, Merlot, and Sangiovese. In the vineyard and in the winery, the two siblings work hard, supported by serious professionals, with whom the path of each wine is decided.

Il Torchio has a fascinating history behind it, telling the desire of two young people to take on important responsibilities, a journey that can be an example for all those who want to embark on the path of viticulture. Every year, four different labels are produced, in which the terroir of the Colli di Luni is expressed with different facets: among these, Vermentino represents its best traits.Bottles with vibrant colors and eye-catching packaging, to be tasted not only for the goodness of the contained product but also to help grow a project that, from its very first steps, proves to be serious, virtuous, and authoritative.
