Loxarel

Loxarel is a name that was officially registered in 1987, but boasts four generations of winemakers behind it. Demonstrating its vocation and innovative spirit, at just 16 years old, Josep Mitjans crafted his first 1,000 bottles of Metodo Classico sparkling wine, effectively breaking the tradition of mass production at the family estate. It was 1985, and from that moment, he began an upward journey in the development of the company’s production processes: Josep studied oenology and took the reins of the winery, managing the complete reconversion of the vineyards with the aim of reclaiming the value of the iconic house variety, Xarel-lo.

Loxarel represents the home and life of Josep Mitjans and his wife Teresa Nin, daughter of a winemaker from Priorat, the result of the union of their respective viticultural heritages. The ancient farm of Vilobí del Penedès, inherited from Josep's grandmother, is surrounded by 20 hectares of vineyards characterized by calcareous soils and stretched across the heights that see the Mediterranean on their horizon.south-western, at about 260-280 meters above sea level. The Pla de Manlleu is instead the part of the Nin family, a few dozen kilometers further west: another 20 hectares of property, on heights that reach nearly 500 meters above sea level and defined by soils with a more significant clay component. The agronomic management has been dedicated to organic farming since 2000 and shortly thereafter they became part of the local group of biodynamic winemakers Terra Dinámica: no chemical interventions are carried out in the vineyard or cellar and the observation of the lunar calendar is fundamental.

Loxarel Vitivinicultors takes its name from the flagship variety of the estates, namely Xarel-lo. The cultivated varieties are actually quite numerous, both indigenous and international, and production is substantially divided in half, between sparkling wines Metodo Classico and still wines: Macabeu, Parellada, Garnacha Blanca, Chardonnay, are accompanied by the black berries Xarel-lo Vermell, Garnacha Negra, Cariñena, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon. Josep is a pioneer of the useof amphora in Catalonia, introduced in 2012: the vessels of 720 and 1,000 liters are made by a craftsman from Extremadura who continues a clay processing tradition dating back to the 18th century and are placed in a special environment of the cellar carved out of a World War II air raid shelter. Production slightly exceeds 300,000 bottles, consisting of about twenty labels with extremely distinctive graphics.
