Quinta do Pessegueiro
Quinta do Pessegueiro is a Portuguese winery in the Alto Douro region. The estate is owned by Roger Zannier, a textile entrepreneur, who today manages estates in various regions of Portugal and also in France. During some business trips, he was captivated by the beauty of the Douro Valley landscape and in 1991 decided to purchase Quinta do Pessegueiro. The estate has expanded over the years and currently consists of three plots, all located in the Douro region, in an area of extraordinary scenic beauty. Roger Zannier approached this land with great respect for the oldest traditions, which are still the foundation of vineyard work today, while innovating regarding winemaking processes, also thanks to the expert advice of João Nicolau de Almeida. In the Douro Valley, viticulture has over two thousand years of history and already at the time of the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, vines were cultivated and wine was produced in this land. In 1756, the Douro region has become the first area in the world delimited by a true denomination. The soils are stony and draining, characterized by the presence of schists, slate, and granite. The vineyards are cultivated on steep slopes, often terraced with dry stone walls, to facilitate their cultivation. The continental climate, with very hot sunny days and cool nights, allows the grapes to ripen slowly and with rich and elegant aromas.
The estate is committed to enhancing the terroir of the Alto Douro area and its numerous indigenous grape varieties, which constitute one of its riches. The vines dig their roots deep, finding their way through the cracks in the rocks, in search of water and nutrients. The vineyards of Quinta do Pessegueiro are divided into three parcels: Pessegueiro, Teixeira, and Afurada, which are managed individually to enhance their peculiar characteristics and produce wines with remarkable personality. The property is managed following principles of sustainable agriculture and all activities are powered by the use of only renewable energies.
