Ricci Curbastro
Ricci Curbastro represents a historic name for the Franciacorta area, involved in the production of excellence wines for over a century. Not only sparkling wines, the Ricci Curbastro winery also produces fine still wines, both white and red, backed by a family agricultural tradition of almost a millennium. Originally from Florence, in the 13th century the noble Ricci Curbastro family settled in Lugo di Romagna, in the province of Ravenna, after being expelled from the current Tuscan capital during the wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines. In 1885 they arrived in Lombardy, precisely in Capriolo, a municipality located in the northwestern part of Franciacorta. Gualberto Ricci Curbastro is credited with the qualitative improvement and modernization of the winery at the end of the '60s, while today it is his son Riccardo Ricci Curbastro who continues the family business, assisted by the young Filippo and Gualberto.
The Ricci Curbastro estate has approximately 30 hectares of vineyards, reserved for the three classic grape varieties of Franciacorta: Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and Pinot Bianco. For still wines, other grapes are also used, such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Barbera. All these varieties are grown sustainably according to the principles of organic farming on morainic soils. The production of sparkling bases begins with the gentle pressing of the grapes, and the must obtained is conveyed into stainless steel tanks or small oak barrels where alcoholic fermentation takes place at controlled temperature, followed by a short aging in the same types of wine containers. For still wines, the containers used are the same, but the aging period is extended. Once ready, the base wine is bottled and added with tirage syrup for refermentation according to the Metodo Classico, with aging on the lees in glass ranging from a minimum of 30 months for the fresher and more accessible sparkling wines to over 100 months for the more complex and prestigious ones.
