Tenuta di Valgiano
The Tuscan wine estate Tenuta di Valgiano has played an important role in the artisan wine movement, being one of the first wineries in Italy to embrace biodynamic agriculture. The estate, located in the eponymous area of Valgiano, within the Colline Lucchesi region, was founded in the early '90s and is skillfully managed by Moreno Petrini and Laura Di Collobiano, supported by the technical expertise and sensitivity of Saverio Petrilli, one of the most esteemed and renowned oenologists in the world of artisan wines. The property is surrounded by woods and olive groves, and in addition to biodynamics, the productive spirit embraced by Moreno, Laura, and Saverio is based on a minimalist oenology.
The 16 hectares of vineyards owned by Tenuta di Valgiano are planted on limestone soils rich in marls and sandstones, located at an altitude between 120 and 250 meters above sea level. Alongside traditional Tuscan varieties such as Sangiovese, Vermentino, Trebbiano, and Malvasia, the estate cultivates international grape varieties.such as Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. In the fields, the principles of biodynamic agriculture are strictly followed, utilizing among other things biodynamic preparations and techniques such as green manuring. The climate of the area is influenced both by the sea breezes coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea and by the proximity to the Apennines, factors that determine the development of strong temperature variations between day and night. After manual harvesting, a meticulous selection of the bunches follows, which, for red grapes, are destemmed and fermented in oak barrels for spontaneous alcoholic fermentation, accompanied by delicate extraction techniques. The subsequent aging phase takes place in French oak barriques of multiple uses and in vitrified concrete tanks, while for white wines, stainless steel tanks are also adopted.
The wines of Tenuta di Valgiano are able to convey the genuine and pure philosophy behind them, positioning themselves as authentic representatives of another enological Tuscany, far from the classicism of.Montalcino and Chianti, as well as from the internationality of Bolgheri, possessing a character all its own with sublime charm.
