Villa Calicantus
On the Veneto side of Lake Garda, in the heart of the Bardolino Classico wine region, the small artisanal reality of Villa Calicantus dedicates itself with passion and love to the enhancement of Bardolino, a traditional wine from Verona. The couple Chiara and Daniele cultivate about 8 hectares of vineyards, located in three of the best hills of the area, from which they produce only 30,000-40,000 bottles per year depending on the vintage. Since 2011, the winery has been working organically, and three years later, it converted to biodynamic agriculture. Pursuing a highly qualitative and at the same time sustainable viticulture, Villa Calicantus aims to bring Bardolino to enological celebrity.
The owned vineyards are distributed in the highest hills, surrounded by woods and olive groves, on morainic soils. The cultivated varieties are the indigenous ones from Verona, namely Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara. In accordance with the practices provided by biodynamic agriculture, only low doses of copper and sulfur are used in the fight against pathogens, supported by the use of herbal infusions, excluding any synthetic chemical substances.pathogens, supported by the use of various herbal infusions, excluding any synthetic chemical substances. Furthermore, the different processes and the application of biodynamic preparations follow the lunar calendar. In order to enhance the unique expression of the terroir, the vinifications are parcelled, so that each vineyard can communicate its intrinsic characteristics, while enological intervention is minimal, without the use of selected yeasts and without clarification or filtration.
The selection of wines includes a sparkling rosé refermented in the bottle, a still rosé Chiaretto, and three different Bardolino from single vineyards. Alongside the winemaking activity, Villa Calicantus is dedicated to hospitality through a small agriturismo that allows tasting the various labels while sampling delicious local products. The calicanto, which gives its name to the winery, is a plant native to Asia whose name, derived from Greek, means "winter flower", referring to the extraordinary ability of the shrub to bloom even in the coldest months.
