Weingut Weninger

The Weingut Weninger has been connected to the soil of Horitschon since 1828. There in Burgenland, the easternmost Austrian region bordering Hungary, the young Franz Ludwig Weninger tries to navigate the unforeseen challenges of agriculture in a devastated Europe, recovering from World War II. The family experiences their relationship with the land in a visceral way, cultivating various plant varieties for their sustenance, but with a keen eye on the vines, which have been nurtured since those years, adapting them over time to find the most suitable for this type of terroir.

The wines of Weingut Weninger are born from varied clay soils of limestone and gneiss, one of the oldest metamorphic rocks constituting the continental crust. It is here that vines over 50 years old, including those of Blaufrankisch, tell the story of a tradition of love, sweat, passion, misfortune, tears, but also strokes of luck and personal victories. The biodynamic approach of this winery is already evident in the manual operations in the vineyard, defended methodology by the current owner Franz Reinhard, who is firmly against mechanical harvesting, which would stress the plants that, on the contrary, should be worked with for decades. The fermentations occur spontaneously only with indigenous yeasts, after a few days of maceration and age from 14 to 18 months on fine lees in oak barrels, increasing the organoleptic range in the bottle.

The reds and whites of Weingut Weninger are the children of a redemption, in every sense. Franz Ludwing, after a failed investment, saw his estate put up for auction, and only his son Franz, returning from America where he had made a fortune, managed to redeem it, giving it to his brother Ludwing and his wife Rosa. Today their son Franz Ludwing and grandson Franz Reinhard  reap the fruits of these efforts from vines over 80 years old, which give us their soft, unusual, and surprising profile.  The current representatives of the Weninger family boast over 35 years of experience in their entrepreneurial project that has allowed the winery to expand and express itself with the voice of the great territory and the passion of the winemakers who have cultivated it for years.
