Balter

The Trentino sparkling wine house Balter is a wine gem of the Rovereto territory, located a few kilometers from the northern tip of Lake Garda, centered around a fortified settlement built in the 16th century for military purposes with two attached towers. Over time, thanks to the introduction of a stable, a barn, and a garden, the structure shifted its focus towards sharecropping, and in 1872, an ancestor of the Balter family, Francesco, purchased the property which he began to manage together with his brother Attilio. In the following decades, the agricultural activity of the estate experienced a period of crisis, first due to the two world wars and then, in the 1950s, because of the Balter family's attention to the parallel business of selling carpets and flooring. Since 1965, the Balters returned to diligently dedicate themselves to viticulture, delivering grapes to local wineries until 1990, the year in which the underground winery was built and independent wine production began. Besides technical reasons, the choice to build the winery follows the desire not to impact the wonderful hilly landscape of Rovereto and the ancient fortified settlement that rises at the top, also depicted in the estate's logo.

The vineyards of the Balter winery are planted on 10 hectares around the fortified settlement and are dedicated to the traditional grape varieties of Trento DOC sparkling wines: Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. The still wines are instead produced from Lagrein, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. After the harvest, the bunches are immediately transferred to the winery and subjected to a delicate pressing, followed by the processing of the musts in stainless steel tanks or small oak barrels. The sparkling process occurs in the bottle according to the Metodo Classico, with at least 24 months of aging on the lees in the bottle, which can even reach 72 in the case of the prized Riserva Pas Dosé. The entire production process, including disgorging, takes place within the estate under the supervision of the Balter family.

The sparkling wines of the Balter winery stand out for their high refinement, the result of a precise production approach that leaves nothing to chance
