Chartogne Taillet
Chartogne-Taillet is a historic Maison in Merfy. The Domaine is located northwest of Reims, in an area where, since the 7th century, vignerons have dedicated themselves to vine cultivation, thanks to the heritage left by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint Thierry, who spread the culture of the vine among the local population. Over the centuries, generation after generation, the Benedictine monks and the winemakers of Merfy have shaped a beautiful vineyard landscape that still defines the territory today. A patient work that has allowed for a deep understanding of the characteristics of these lands and to differentiate and isolate the individual parcels, creating that qualitative mosaic of vines, which represents one of the most precious treasures of the Champagne region.
The geological and microclimatic knowledge of each single vineyard has allowed for the creation of an initial map of the area, characterized by local toponyms, which then transformed into true cadastral lieu dits, capable of identifying the different parcels. The Chartogne-Taillet family has been present in these lands since the end of the 15th century. In the 1700s, Fiacre Taillet wrote the memoirs of his life as a vigneron and the main events of his country, which testify to a strong rooting in the territory of Merfy. Even today, the Maison Chartogne-Taillet feels connected to this history and to a time when the work of the vigneron was marked by manual and daily labor in the vineyard, without any help from machinery, but possibly only from horses. A direct relationship with nature based on experience and knowledge passed down from one generation to another, with the sole aim of preserving a rich and precious savoir-faire.
The new generations of the Chartogne-Taillet family feel part of this history and guardians of the transmission of the oldest traditions, to remain faithful to their territory. The methods followed for planting the vineyards, the pruning and cultivation techniques refer back to the ancient teachings of the past. The experience of the Benedictine monks still lives today in the daily gestures that unite ancient customs and modern knowledge, two visions that often are not in contrast, but find a common horizon in respecting the environment and the natural vitality of the soils. The vineyards are managed according to principles of sustainability, with the aim of producing genuine grapes, which translate into Champagne of extraordinary purity, faithful interpreters of the terroir of Merfy.
