C.H.Berres
The C.H. Berres Winery is located in Ürzig in the heart of the Moselle region, the German region famous worldwide for its extraordinary white wines made from Riesling. It is a historic reality of the territory, boasting ancient origins. The Berres family has been cultivating vineyards and producing great wines for over five centuries, respecting the oldest traditions. After completing his studies in viticulture and enology in Geisenheim, Markus Berres, representing the twenty-first generation, has managed the family estate since 2003. It is a small estate, with a total area of just over three hectares, divided into numerous parcels, located in some of the most prized terroirs of the area.
The estate actually owns parcels in the areas of Ürziger Würzgarten, Ürziger Goldwingert, Erdener Treppchen, and in three of the best Grand Cru of the Moselle, with old vines still cultivated on steep slopes that overlook the river. The climate is continental, rather cold, with significant temperature fluctuations and a very slow maturation of the grapes, which are harvested in autumn. The soils are poor and stony, characterized by the presence of slate shards, which make them very draining. The dark-colored stones accumulate heat during the day and release it to the vines at night, helping to mitigate the colder temperatures. A particularly difficult habitat, where Riesling has found ideal conditions for centuries to express itself at excellent levels.
The philosophy of the estate is oriented towards maximum quality. The small size favors meticulous care of each individual parcel and a still artisanal approach. All vineyard work is done by hand, from winter pruning to harvesting, as the steep slopes do not allow the use of machinery. Harvests take place at full ripeness of the grapes, when the clusters reach a beautiful golden yellow color and the aromas are particularly intense. Riesling, in fact, still maintains a high acidity and perfect balance even during over-ripening. The grapes are carefully selected in the vineyard and then further selected in the cellar to ensure maximum quality.
