Domaine Stephan

Jean-Michel Stephan is the spirit of Domaine Stephan. A charismatic and highly skilled winemaker who has cultivated his passion for nature in the vineyard. Son of a family of horticulturists and arborists, he decided to pursue oenological studies in Beaujolais, taking his first steps in the wine world in 1991, the year he decided to inherit the family vineyards. Before Jean-Michel's arrival, the family sold the grapes and the products of the land that they then sold on the market. The young talent of Jean-Michel, seeing great potential in the grapes, decided to undertake his own production (already partly initiated by his mother in 1987), vinifying his own grapes and setting up a dedicated winery. Today the company has a handful of hectares, of which the largest parcel is that at Coteau de Bassenon, followed by Tupin, Coteuax de Tupin, and Verenay.

Most of the vineyards of Domaine Stephan are terraced on very steep land with slopes of over 40°. The soil has a composition rich in granite and the vines are over 30 years old. The cultivated grapesare those typical of the Rhône, with a high percentage of Syrah, followed by Viognier and Serine. The latter is a very rare clone of Syrah with a smaller berry. Fermentations occur spontaneously and aging is mainly done in steel or cement.

The wines of Stephan encapsulate all the beauty of the Rhône and portray all its typical aspects. They are genuine, sincere, and unique bottles, endowed with an unmistakable expressiveness and a flavor that recalls the land of origin. They also have excellent aging potential, capable of evolving for many years!
