Ettore Germano
The Ettore Germano winery is considered an undisputed reference point for wine in the Langhe, a status achieved thanks to a varied production characterized by a superb and constant quality level. The bond between the Germano family and the vine has deep roots, dating back to 1856, when the Germano family owned 4 hectares of vineyard in the Cerretta area, in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba, which is still the site of the activity today. The baton passed from Francesco Germano first to his son Alberto and then to his grandson Ettore, after whom the winery is named. He was the first in the family to produce wine to market it under his own label, after decades during which his predecessors had dedicated themselves exclusively to the cultivation and sale of grapes. Thus, in 1975 the Ettore Germano winery was born. The entry of Sergio, Ettore's son and current owner, was fundamental in continuing the work of expanding the estate and consolidating the family name in the markets. Sergio, supported by his wife Elena Bonelli and his children Elia and Maria, personally takes care of every aspect of production, from vineyard management to the processes oenological.
The Ettore Germano estate has 20 hectares of vineyards rooted in soils of predominantly clay-limestone matrix. The cultivated varieties include the traditional Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nascetta, as well as Riesling Renano and the noble Pinot Nero and Chardonnay used for the sparkling wine range. Focusing on Barolo, the winemaking involves prolonged maceration on the skins in temperature-controlled steel tanks, followed by aging in tonneau or large oak barrels. Another excellence of the winery is the Alta Langa sparkling wines, produced through an initial fermentation in steel or tonneau and subsequent bottle fermentation with at least 30 months of aging on the lees, exceeding 60 months for the most prestigious bubbles.
The wines of the Ettore Germano winery have been recognized worldwide as some of the best expressions of the Langhe, not surprisingly awarded multiple times by national and international critics. What impresses when tasting the range of Germano labels is the excellence of each type, from the refined Alta Langa to the powerful Barolo, passing through the legendary ‘Hérzu’, one of the finest Italian interpretations of Riesling Renano. In particular, among the Barolo crus that the estate can boast, the prestigious names ‘Cerretta’, ‘Vignarionda’, ‘Lazzarito’, and ‘Prapò’ stand out, all located in Serralunga d’Alba.
