Ghiraldi Nunzio
The Nunzio Ghiraldi winery is located near Sirmione, one of the most charming villages on Lake Garda. We are in the Lombardia region, just a stone's throw from Veneto, in the southernmost area of the lake, where in the 1950s the adventure of this winemaking reality began, inaugurated with the purchase in 1953 of the Sant’Onorata estate by grandfather Nunzio, an engineer from Cremona. Nunzio immediately realized that the land was perfectly suited for cultivating the most symbolic variety of the lake, namely Trebbiano di Lugana, also locally known as “Turbiana”. The clear waters of the lake, the constant breezes, the mountains in the background, and the clay-rich soil have allowed for the creation of a unique terroir, where the vines cultivated by Nunzio have found a new cradle to give birth to healthy and aromatic bunches. Nunzio, grandson of the namesake grandfather, is the last heir of the estate and after graduating in law, he decided to follow his natural inclination.
Nunzio Ghirlandi cultivates the vines on a land difficult, but with great potential. The layered clay, of sedimentary nature formed during the glaciation, occupies more than 50% of the territorial matrix. The vines have a low yield and a variable age that reaches, in some plots, even 60 years. According to Nunzio, the land is the fundamental ingredient for making good wine, so integrated and reasoned viticulture is practiced, herbicides are not used, and fertilization is done only with manure. The winery, dating back to the 1600s, is equipped with modern equipment, but the techniques used are still the ancient ones.
The wines of Nunzio Ghiraldi are typically Lugane produced with ancient clones of Turbiana. They have a delicate and pure demeanor, fresh and fine, clean and balanced, with valuable mineral notes and savory nuances, expressing the characteristics of the original territory at their best. A simple, impeccable, and typical line, perfect for those who want to discover the charm of the “lord of the great Lake”.
