Le Casematte

The Le Casematte estate is an authentic interpreter of the Faro denomination, a wine with a millenary history as viticulture was introduced in the area by Greek colonists. The winery is located in Contrada Corso, on the hills north of Messina, a territory where in 2008 the accountant Gianfranco Sabbatino, together with his friend footballer Andrea Barzagli, world champion with the national team in 2006, started an ambitious wine project aimed at bringing prestige to the Faro territory. The technical management has been entrusted to the expert oenologist Carlo Ferrini, already a key figure at the Ilcinese winery Giodo and a consultant for renowned Italian wine companies such as Tenuta San Leonardo, Brancaia, and Pietradolce, just to name a few. The curious name Le Casematte comes from the presence near the vineyards of two casematte, military fortifications intended for artillery used during World War II.

The 11 hectares of vineyards owned by the Le Casematte estate are managed organically and are dedicated to traditional black grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera, and Nero d’Avola, alongside which also find space the white grape varieties Grillo and Carricante. The vines, trained using trellis and bush systems, rest on hilly soils exposed to the north and overlooking the sea, located at about 500 meters above sea level. The area also benefits from a Mediterranean climate, influenced by sea breezes and characterized by significant temperature variations between day and night. For the production of red wines, the grapes are fermented in conical steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation is accompanied by prolonged maceration on the skins, with subsequent aging periods taking place in French oak barriques and tonneaux. Instead, the processing of white grapes occurs entirely in steel with low-temperature alcoholic fermentation.
