Montesecondo

The Montesecondo production began in 2000 from a specific question that the winemaker Silvio Messana asked himself: "What wine will this land give me?". Vintage after vintage, the answer has become increasingly clear, along with the awareness of not working the land, but working for the land, giving it the opportunity to express itself in all its characteristics. Thus, the vineyard has become not just a tool for production, but a living and changing organism, in symbiosis with the work of man, but not at his service. Fascinated by this changeability, complexity, and ability to surprise, Silvio returned to the Montesecondo estate, purchased by his father in the early '60s and from which he had distanced himself in youth to pursue the dream of becoming a jazz musician in New York.

The Montesecondo wines tell the story of a return to the origins in Chianti, of the transformation of a vineyard intended solely for cultivation for the big names of the region into the production of wines according to the rules imposed by the land. The vineyard area of the estate extends for about 17 hectares on land from 350 to 450 meters above sea level, similar for the grapes it hosts but different in composition, exposure, and climate. The varieties of Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, and Petit Verdot find their home on clayey soils and occasionally sandy soils and on more calcareous soils. Silvio's philosophy has materialized over time in the adoption of a biodynamic regime and in the rediscovery of winemaking in amphora, far from stylistic trends that are less respectful of Tuscan tradition.

Montesecondo is a living testimony, through its labels, of how the uniqueness of native grape varieties can express itself when it is supported and not hindered by overly aggressive interventions. Just like a good jazz solo, the wines of the winery reveal a complexity that is sometimes rough, but with a refined and aristocratic soul, which in the hands of a capable interpreter unleash all their power. Under Silvio's guidance, the estate has been able to propose in Italy and abroad, a unique version of theChianti territory, in a success story that recalls the last line of fairy tales.
