Picchioni Andrea

The Picchioni winery, located in Canneto Pavese, in the eastern part of the Oltrepò wine region, was founded in 1988 by Andrea Picchioni's decision to recover old vineyards to dedicate himself to viticulture, embracing a truly sustainable production vision focused on enhancing the territory. Among the sustainable practices employed by the producer are: fertilization with cattle manure and with the same pomace produced by the winery, the absence of soil tillage to avoid erosion and soil depletion, the safeguarding of a part of the forest attached to the estate to preserve biodiversity and compensate for the CO2 produced by agricultural machinery, and the use of recycled paper for bottle packaging.

The estate of Andrea Picchioni has 10 hectares of vineyards located in the Val Solinga, on a very steep hillside facing south and consisting of loose soil rich in sand and pebbles, very suited for the production of high-quality wines. Here, the producer cultivates certified organic varieties.traditional Croatina, Barbera, Uva Rara and Vespolina, in the local clone of Ughetta di Solinga, as well as the international grape Pinot Nero, a variety that has found a second home in the Oltrepò Pavese area. The harvest is done by hand, and the grapes are then subjected to destemming and crushing. For fermentation, stainless steel tanks or cement vats are used, the same types of containers employed for the subsequent maturation phase. The wines destined to become sparkling are then transferred to autoclaves for a light frothing according to the Charmat Method, using only the residual sugars from the wine and the yeasts already present for refermentation. Some still wines, on the other hand, are aged in old exhausted wooden barrels of various sizes, and throughout the entire production process, no filtration is performed. Andrea also produces a bottle-fermented wine and a Classic Method sparkling wine.

The interpretations of the Picchioni Andrea winery stand out for their lively and vibrant personality, as well as for the strong territorial adherence. Among the wines produced, special mention should be made of the Buttafuoco ‘Bricco Riva Bianca’, a still red made from Croatina, Barbera, and Ughetta di Solinga grapes, produced exclusively in the best vintages.
