Quinta da Serradinha

Quinta da Serradinha is a Portuguese winery located in Leiria, in the first hilly hinterland of the ocean coast between Coimbra and Lisbon. The origins of viticulture in this land are ancient. The first vineyards were planted during the Roman colonization of the Iberian Peninsula, near the ancient city of Collipo, right on the hill of São Sebastião do Freixo, close to the Serra de Aire and the Valley of Lis, an area still famous today for high-quality production. The tradition of viticulture was interrupted during the Arab domination, only to revive in the 12th century, thanks to the efforts of the religious communities of Cistercian monks in Alcobaça and Santa Cruz in Leiria.

Already in the early statutes of the village of Leiria, there is mention of several wines from the territory, confirming the importance of viticulture for the region's economy. During the Middle Ages, some of the most famous and prized Portuguese wines, which were exported to Northern Europe, known as “vinos de Azoy” came from Azoaia, which is located a few kilometers from Leiria. The splendor of the region's vineyards was devastated first by the French invasions, then by the civil war, and finally by the arrival in Europe of oidium, downy mildew, and phylloxera, which destroyed almost all the vines. Only towards the beginning of the 1900s, with the introduction and spread of viticulture based on American rootstocks, the area regained its ancient splendor.

The Quinta da Serradinha estate is currently managed according to the principles of organic farming, without any use of herbicides, fertilizers, or chemical preparations. The vines are treated only with small doses of sulfur and copper. This choice was made to promote a healthy ecosystem that can favor biodiversity and the natural vitality and fertility of the soils. To create an environment as natural as possible, Quinta da Serradinha has preserved 3 hectares of forest and olive groves that surround the vineyard plots. The presence of numerous old vines allows for the production of grapes of extraordinary quality and aromatic concentration. The wines faithfully reflect the characteristics of the indigenous grape varieties of the area, and the wines stand out for their straightforward and sincere profile.
