Sardus Pater

The wine-growing reality of Sardus Pater is a reference point in Italy for Carignano, a black grape variety widespread throughout the Mediterranean basin that gives its best in warm and arid climates like that of southern Sardinia. In particular, Sardus Pater represents a historic cooperative winery based in Sant’Antioco, a fascinating island in the southwest of Sardinia where the estate was established in 1949, which began operations six years later, in 1955. Currently, the winery has over 200 contributing members, united by their passion for viticulture and love for their land. The symbol of the estate is the coin minted on the island of Sant’Antioco during Roman times, which represents Sardus Pater, the god of Nuragic civilization venerated at the temple of Antas.

Sardus Pater has as many as 300 hectares of vineyards, mainly reserved for the Carignano grape variety, associated with smaller percentages of other indigenous varieties such as Cannonau, Monica, Vermentino, Moscato, and Nasco. The winery can boast partly century-old rooted vines rooted, that is, without any grafting of American vines, trained as bush vines on soils made up of white sand. The vines, immersed among bushes of mastic, myrtle, strawberry tree, and juniper near the sea, also enjoy the constant presence of brackish Mediterranean breezes, which can impart a peculiar character to the wines. For fermentations and aging, various types of wine containers are adopted, such as stainless steel tanks, concrete tanks, barriques, and oak tonneaux.

The wide production of the cooperative winery Sardus Pater includes labels of exquisite craftsmanship with an exceptional quality-price ratio, aimed at enhancing the extraordinary wine context of the island of Sant’Antioco, with Carignano del Sulcis as the fundamental core. The flagship of the selection is the Carignano del Sulcis Superiore ‘Arruga’, an enveloping and deep red wine that reflects the Mediterranean character of the Sulcis area. All the wines are distinguished by their great typicity, stylistic precision, and aromatic cleanliness, quality on which the productive spirit of the estate is based.
