Clos du Tue Boeuf

Clos du Tue Boeuf is a domain with an ancient history. The first traces of a farm located in the lieu-dit Tue-Boeuf, in the area of Montils, date back to the Middle Ages. Today, the estate is managed by Jean-Marie and Thierry Puzelat, who produce a range of genuine and straightforward wines, capable of directly and immediately representing the terroir. The vineyards were completely renewed during the 1960s with the intent of improving the quality of the grapes and enhancing the typical grape varieties of the area. The property is located in Touraine, at the center of the Loire Valley region, which runs through France from Auvergne to the Atlantic Ocean and represents one of the most extensive and important vineyards in the country.

The estate extends between Touraine and Cheverny. About 11 hectares are located in the municipality of Montils and are part of the historic core of Clos de Tue-Boeuf, 9.5 hectares are in the Cheverny Appellation, and about 3 hectares are in the area of Monthou-sur-Bièvre. Among the rows, there are many varieties historically cultivated in the area: Pinot Noir, Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc, Fié gris, Chardonnay, Aligoté, Orbois, Côt, Pineau d’Aunis, and Meslier. The composition of the soils is quite heterogeneous, with the presence of siliceous clays, chalky limestones, and alluvial areas of pebbles and sands. The estate consists of many small parcels located within an area surrounded by woods, which ensure a rich natural biodiversity. Most of the vineyards are about 50 years old and were planted with a density of 4500 vines per hectare, but there are also some precious old vines over a hundred years old, which constitute a historical heritage of the territory, even in terms of clonal biodiversity.

The agronomic management is carried out according to the principles of organic farming certified since 1996, with soil cultivation partly mechanical and partly using horses, to avoid compacting the soil. The harvest of healthy, perfectly ripe, and genuine grapes is done manually and allows for working in the cellar with a light enology and with a very low in sulfur. Each parcel is vinified separately to enhance its peculiarities, which are then transferred to the bottle, thanks to a rich production of labels. The company's philosophy is indeed oriented towards the creation of authentic and direct wines, capable of expressing the qualities of the grape variety, the characteristics of the territory, and each individual vintage.
