Hauner
Hauner is a historic winery from the Aeolian Islands. It produces excellent wines that perfectly express the character of this splendid Sicilian archipelago. The estate was founded in 1968 by Carlo Hauner, a Brescia native of Bohemian origins, who after a career as a painter and designer decided to embark on a new adventure in viticulture, choosing Salina as his retreat. Captivated by the beauty of the island during some summer holidays, he moved to Salina and became fascinated by the traditional cultivation of Malvasia, which after the harvest is dried in the sun to produce sweet wines. His winemaking knowledge is based on the experience passed down by local farmers, supplemented by reading books on agronomy and oenology.
Before long, he began searching for cultivable land and found numerous plots abandoned due to the emigration to the New World of many island inhabitants. The parcels form a mosaic of about twenty hectares, which through patient work, are cleaned and restored to viticulture, also restoring the ancientterraces supported by dry stone walls. Hauner begins the production of Malvasia, introducing some innovations, such as drying the grapes on the vine and low-temperature fermentations. His success is immediate and his wines receive the first recognitions both in Italy and abroad. In the 1980s, he decided to give a turn to his activity by creating a new winery, which hosts modern temperature-controlled steel tanks in addition to wooden barrels for aging. An essential choice, which leads to a further qualitative improvement of the wines.
Over the years, the range of wines from the winery has expanded with other labels. The new market demands and the changing tastes of consumers lead Carlo Hauner to start producing Salina Bianco and Salina Rosso as well. The mild and sunny Mediterranean climate, refreshed by sea breezes and the maestrale, along with the volcanic soils rich in minerals, allow for the production of grapes of excellent quality.
