Palari
Palari is an iconic name in Sicilian winemaking, a estate that has uniquely contributed to enhancing the territory of Faro, a denomination whose production area lies in the north-eastern tip of the island. The soul of the winery is Salvatore Geraci, a passionate and charismatic producer who embarked on this winemaking adventure in 1990 in the Palari district of Santo Stefano Briga, in the province of Messina, with the aim of saving the Faro denomination. Salvatore is a man of great versatility, an architect by training who stays far away from passing trends while remaining firmly anchored to the fascinating and ancient character of the Messina territory. The winery is located in the beautiful 18th-century villa of the Geraci family, where all production processes take place, from vinification to aging.
The 7 hectares of vineyards that the Palari estate can count on, overlooking the Strait of Messina, include bush-trained vines on terraces, carved from steep hills characterized by vertiginous slopes that reach up to 70%. The altitudes are remarkable, with heights touching 600 meters above sea level, while the climate is typically Mediterranean with the presence of sea breezes and strong temperature fluctuations between day and night. On these peculiar environmental parameters, Salvatore Geraci cultivates the traditional grape varieties Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Nocera, as well as other rare black grape varieties from the area such as Acitana, Galatena, Jacché, and Core 'e Palumba. The winemaking approach is as simple as it is rigorous, based on spontaneous fermentations in stainless steel tanks and subsequent aging in new Tronçais and Allier oak barrels for Faro Palari and second-use for 'Rosso del Soprano'. Throughout the production process, the use of clarification or filtration operations is excluded, in maximum respect for the expressive purity of the wines.
The flagship label of the Palari winery is Faro Palari, an elegant and complex red with extraordinary longevity, among the greatest Sicilian wines. Also noteworthy is the quality of the more accessible 'Rosso del Soprano', produced with the same blend as Faro Palari presented in a more immediate guise, yet not lacking in complexity.
