Prevostini Mamete
Among the stars that have illuminated the wine-growing territory of Valtellina for years, the Mamete Prevostini winery surely deserves a mention. Valtellina, in the language of the vines, is Nebbiolo delle Alpi, or rather Chiavennasca, as this red grape is locally called, which has found a second home on the slopes of the extreme north of Lombardy. A unique area in its own right, to be considered a micro-galaxy of our peninsula for the quantity and quality of products it churns out every year: apples, tasty cheeses, typical bresaole, the famous polenta taragna, not to mention the classic pizzoccheri and, last but not least, the great red wines. Mamete Prevostini knows this well, as it is one of the main and most symbolic representatives of the precious nectar of Bacchus.
Along the first heights at the foot of the majestic Alps, at an altitude between 300 and 700 meters, grow the vineyards of this ancient and historic local winery, founded in the early '70s, but still today considered a reference point in the Valtellinese wine scene. All of thisbegan almost a century ago when the grandparents founded an agriturismo. They worked the land, grew their own fruits and vegetables, and could count on a natural refrigerator, a cavity carved into the rock, the “crotto”, where a constant wind blows that helps maintain constant humidity and freshness. Today, alongside this ancient estate, where Mamete preserves the ancient treasures and old memories, a new winery rises in Postalesio with the seal of “casaclima wines”, an eco-sustainability project, which houses three floors dedicated respectively to the operations of drying, fermentation, and aging.
The winery boasts several crus: Sommarovina, the first vineyard in Sassella purchased in 1996, San Lorenzo, adjacent to the San Lorenzo Convent in the Sassella area, La Crus, the youngest in the Inferno subzone, and Vertemate, where white grapes are also grown. The viticulture of the area can be defined as heroic, as the vineyards are organized in steep terraces and the grapes are still harvested by hand.hand. The wines of Mamete Prevostini are characterized by a mountainous and elegant profile, enveloped by an intense bouquet of small forest fruits, and capable, in just a few sips, of evoking the magic of these lands.
